The formula
The buzz word for branding these days are storytelling. Every creative company sells the ability to let your product or service shine through a well-told story on all social media platforms with a nice picture or two. They promise that through consistent posting, you will have a following in no time. But does it work?
Maybe.
It depends if you are in it for the long haul or if you want to find an audience that will believe anything, that you can manipulate them with whatever nonsense you come up with. Those audiences tend to not stick around for very long.
So what's the deal here? What works? There are a few ingredients that make for a compelling story. The type of story you are going to tell depends on the type of relationship you want to build with your audience. This is a long term commitment. The main ingredient you cannot go without is honesty. The kind that builds trust (and here is the big reveal) over TIME. Some forget that somethings really take time to develop.
You can say the formula for building relationships:
r = t(h+t)
That is true for every type of relationship, be it romantic, business, friends, customers, even with your pet rat... So why do marketers, advertisers, branding companies and the like think they can sell a quick solution to companies? Well, they are selling you a false story. Don't stick around for that.
If they do not ask you: "WHY are you doing what you do? WHY does it matter. WHY did you begin this thing in the first place." Then they are not interested in your story as they are not exploring who you really are. If they don't get you, then the stories they write about you will just be a heap of SEO optimised balderdash. More noise in an already deafening world.
You can do better than that.
